I’m taking on a new hobby — Digital Painting! It’s fun to learn new things…but I’ll let you in on a secret.
This hobby is rather dangerous because of the cool new *expensive* equipment that’s veeeeery tempting to buy!
I was raised in a practical, frugal house.
My parents had $10 when they first got married…funny how this amount gets smaller every time they tell the story.
I remember my Mom squeezing ketchup packets from McDonald’s into a container so she wouldn’t have to buy any. Dining out was a special treat, even having a Big Mac at McDonald’s was special.
One Thanksgiving, during their lean years, my Dad found a Turkey that was mis-priced for 27 cents. My Mom bet him he couldn’t buy it for that price, but he ‘cheated’ by choosing the most distracted-looking cashier. The receipt was proudly displayed on the refrigerator for 6 months.
It was a fun game to see who could get a better deal.
I’ve done my parents proud by carrying on the frugal family habits. It’s actually quite practical for creative freelancers LOL.
But everyone has a weakness…
I tend to splurge on travel, education, books and new computer equipment. Leveling up is self-improvement, I reason. Fortune, like a 27 cent Turkey, doesn’t come often.
As a compromise, I stalk Craigslist for used equipment and find travel deals on Groupon Getaways. It’s working so far…wish me luck on deal hunting! ;0)
In the meantime, I’ll make use of the art tools I DO have.
I hope you have a hobby that challenges you and make you feel ALIVE!
